Friday May 9 8pm $20 Slaid Cleaves with very special guest Charles Arthur Doing roadside van repairs, hauling equipment in and out of venues, answering a dozen e-mails a day, planning and booking tours and their financial details, these are not things Maine-raised songwriter Slaid Cleaves envisioned when he said goodbye to a string of day jobs and became a musician full time. But perhaps these mundane tasks ground him, for he is revered for turning out rawneck songs that capture the essential struggle of the Everyman within the resin of a fine melody. That the man still writes and records with his Grade 3 pal Rod Picott hints at the core of values that inform his characters’ wisdom. While Cleaves was once an English major and began busking while attending a semester of university in Cork, Ireland, he has also worked as a janitor, ice cream truck driver, film developer, groundskeeper and even as a human lab rat for a company testing drugs. When he finally went for broke and moved to Austin nearly two decades ago, he put the same humble work ethic into songwriting. In 1997 he hooked up with Rounder Records, where his skills as a songwriter attracted the support of Lucinda Williams’ producer Gurf Morlix, who rounded up the cream of the Austin crop to appear on Cleaves’ national debut, No Angel Knows. By the time his breakout 2000 album Broke Down was released, Cleaves said he had lost money in music every year he’d been in it. Well, all the better to turn out those songs filled with people who know that their rainbow is just around the corner. His other knack is for picking out songs that compliment his. He has noted that Hank Williams didn’t write all of his own hits but really had an ear for finding great songs; in the same manner, Cleaves is a connoisseur of covers, punctuating his sets with the best songwriters you’ve never heard. The characters that traverse his open sky songs are down but never out, forever waiting on something better, something earned. You don’t know whether to feel sorry for the poor saps for their lot in life or envy them their indefatigable hope. Be they race track dreamers, heartbroke gamblers, or barroom fighters, all yearn for a better deal but accept their fate with resignation and even the wisdom of those who can see things for what they are. Cleaves is skilled at summing up the whole drift of their lives within their midlife revelations while tightly wrapping the package with sing-along melodies.-- Mary-Lynn Wardle Calgary Folk Music Festival August 2007

“Frank Vignola turns an endless array of inventive phrases on the guitar. Lightning fast single-note runs veer into perfectly placed sliding chords, yet dazzling virtuosity never comes at the expense of his pure musicality and heartfelt soul and sentimentality.” - Jazz Improv Magazine

Friday May 16 7:30pm $15 Peter Case with very special guest Nathan Moore Case is an active musicologist; in the late 1990s, he curated the musical program for the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. In 2001, he organized, produced, and performed on Avalon Blues, a tribute album to blues music pioneer Mississippi John Hurt, which was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album. Case also had the chance to perform Beatles songs at the Hollywood Bowl with Sir George Martin. He frequently conducts songwriting workshops, both in California, where he now resides, and in other locations. Case's solo performances have featured his own compositions as well as covers of songs by Memphis Minnie, Sleepy John Estes, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and others. In February 2006, Hungry for Music, a non-profit organization based in Washington, DC, released a three-disc tribute to Case, entitled A Case for Case; the set featured cover versions of Case's songs performed by various artists, including John Prine, Susan Cowsill, and others. In 2006 Case began posting on his blog sections of a memoir entitled As Far As You Can Get Without a Passport, which was subsequently issued in book form in January 2007 by everthemore books. The memoir covers Case’s very early days from the time he left his native upstate New York and wound up singing and playing on the streets of San Francisco. This period inspired some of his most memorable songs, including "Entella Hotel "and "Travellin’ Light." John Doe, co-leader of the Los Angeles punk band X, contributed an introduction to the book. Case has continued to write and post autobiographical additional material. On December 6, 2007, Case's Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John was nominated for a Grammy award in the Best Traditional Folk Album category.

"Pat Humphries’ set musically reiterated her outstanding ability as both creator and interpreter of enduring anthems. The composer of the lasting "Never Turning Back" rendered "Keep Your Eyes on the Prize" and "Swimming to the Other Side" with uncommon grace matching a remarkable certainty and strong stage presence." --Dirty Linen

Saturday May 17 10pm $12adv/$15 Jim White White's music can be loosely described as Alternative Country, but veers off in different, sometimes experimental directions with occasional nods to Tom Waits and the literary narratives of Flannery O'Connor, Cormac McCarthy, and Harry Crews. He is signed to David Byrne's Luaka Bop label. Jim White's live shows, particularly when touring solo, can be characterized as off-beat, blending his playlist with open discussion with the audience, anecdotal storytelling derived from his own life experiences, all of which is typically humorous and insightful. He has stated during shows that ultimately he wishes to return to the academic field, particularly as a professor, rather than continue as a professional, touring musician. Much of this is due to his family life, which he has stated takes priority in his life and is the reason he does not like touring very much.

Sunday May 18 7pm $8 The Kids In The Living Room featuring Carleigh Nesbit, Caroline Spence, Genna Mathew, Carl Anderson, Rob Martin, Mike Rizzo, Zander Luke, Jacqueline Stem Some of Charlottesville's finest young singer-songwriters, performing "in the round" in the tradition of "King of My Living Room"
Tuesday May 20 7:30pm $10 Red Stick Ramblers Cajun Dance Party! The Red Stick Ramblers first scooted out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana -- where Young, Justus and drummer Glenn Fields were studying at Louisiana State University -- about eight years ago, suits crisply pressed and bows rosined-up and ready to rollick. They quickly developed a following around the Gulf Coast region thanks to their unflaggingly energetic live shows, and spread the message even more widely with the 2002 release of their self-titled debut album -- a disc that brought them the tag "the great Cajun hope." The Ramblers certainly demonstrated the musical firepower to don that mantle, but deftly sidestepped the pigeonhole it threatened to place them into on their sophomore outing, Bring It on Down. That disc, which nodded to forebears like Bob Wills and Johnny Cash, prompted the New Orleans Times-Picayne to tout them for proffering "a potent brew that swings so hard that it's almost sick, and rocks like crazy."
Wednesday May 21 7:30pm $10 Devon Sproule with very special guest Browning Porter I don’t know if this is the best album I’ve heard this year. It’s close. It’s easily the most joyous. Devon Sproule’s music meets at the intersection of folk, country, and jazz; clarinets colliding with pedal steel, old-time country songs that sound like they could come from The Carter Family subverted by some Django Reinhardt gypsy guitar work. Sproule’s songs are something to behold: Victoria Williams’ playfulness and spunk meeting up with Joni Mitchell’s confessional songwriting chops. To top it off, this is the sexiest, sultriest southern album since Lucinda’s Car Wheels on a Gravel Road.--Paste
Thursday May 22 7:30pm $15 Ellis Paul with very special guest Susan Greenbaum "Ellis Paul began his show solo at the keyboard, singing a song about a girl, a Buick back seat and a dad asking what the movie was about. Paul has a theatrical voice that travels easily from whisper to soaring volume. It's a vibrating marvel of a voice that defies comparison to anyone else." - Doug Hill, The Norman Transcript

"Now 14 albums into his career, Paul has become something of an institution. His dozen-plus Boston Music Awards and frequent appearances at the esteemed Woody Guthrie and Kerrville Folk festivals have cemented his place in the canon of noteworthy American songwriters of the past half-century." -- Nathan Baker, The Cleveland Scene

Susan draws big, enthusiastic audiences who delight in her lively, diverse and powerful performances. Thanks to the internet, she has fans on every continent. She performs solo and with her band and has appeared at such venues as The Bottom Line in NYC, The Birchmere, and Rams Head Tavern. In addition to touring with Jewel, Susan’s credits include performing an acoustic set with Dave Matthews Band violinist Boyd Tinsley; sharing bills with Jill Sobule; and opening for Kenny Loggins, Patty Griffin, Dar Williams, Janis Ian, Todd Snider, Tuck and Patti, Iris DeMent, Lucy Kaplansky, Lloyd Cole and Catie Curtis. Susan also endorses W.L Gore’s Elixir Strings. The most frequently heard comment at her gigs is, "Great songs--and how does all that big, beautiful sound come out of someone under five feet tall?" Thursday May 29 8:30pm $15 An Evening with James McMurtry & the Heartless Bastards On Just Us Kids, James McMurty follows up his critically acclaimed Childish Things with a dozen new, sharply drawn illuminations as he continues to hone and expand his considerable gifts. And the self-produced opus (James’ fourth venture pulling strings on both sides of the glass) unquestionably represents his most ambitious, accomplished and ass-kicking presentation to date. Just Us Kids will be the first release for Nashville-based Lightning Rod Records; label president Logan Rogers previously worked as Vice President of A&R for Compadre Records on McMurtry’s previous two albums. The Texas native long has been known as an astute, clear-eyed observer and concise, no-holds-barred chronicler of the human condition, but a growing socio-political edge fairly exploded just prior to the 2004 elections when his scathing, palace-rattling “We Can’t Make It Here” was made available online as a free download. The seven-plus-minute diatribe against social injustice and the Administration’s hypocrisy and deceptions repercussed wildly across the Internet and the airwaves, igniting a grassroots firestorm that has brought legions of new fans to the singer/songwriter’s work.
Saturday May 31 8pm $18/$20 Melissa Ferrick

Note New Showtime

"One of the hardest-touring artists going, Ferrick somehow found time to lay down her sixth album in the past year. And it's a gem. "In the Eyes of Strangers" maintains Ferrick's trademark for passion, but with even greater emotional boost and anthemic fire this time around. Ferrick exhibits wonderful creative dexterity throughout the album, incorporating country, pop, folk and rock influences into her acoustic-driven sound."-The Seattle Times

Monday June 2 7:30pm $15 Dan Bern “We live in different worlds right along beside each other.”

So sang Dan Bern in one of his early songs. But really we all just live in Dan’s world, and he’s been generous enough to let us believe otherwise all along. Let’s face it: the man has more stray thoughts, makes more obscure and askant connections, tries on more hats, slips into more pairs of shoes, eavesdrops on more conversations, reads more minds, and hears more voices than the rest of us. And what a lucky break for us that he’s had a pen laying around to document, describe, and share so many of them.

Tuesday June 3 8pm $20 / $25 An evening with Over The Rhine After more than 15 years making music, it's obvious Ohio duo Over The Rhine is in it for the long haul, and for keeps. Their commitment is underscored by their latest, The Trumpet Child, and its opening track, "I Don't Wanna Waste Your Time," a manifesto of sorts for the artists recently named to Paste magazine's list of 100 Best Living Songwriters. Look no further than the lyrics to this track for what animates Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist, the married couple at the heart of Over The Rhine: "I hope this night puts down deep roots / I hope we plant a seed / 'Cause I don't wanna waste your time / With music you don't need." "Believe me, we don't want to waste anybody's time," elaborates Detweiler. "When we stop believing we're doing our best work, we're done. Every song has to be good, every record has to be great, every concert has to have some spiritual significance—something that we can't quantify, something bigger than all of us." Over The Rhine may not be a household name, but to call the act's followers "fanatical" would understate the point, and they're not shy about converting the curious.

Thursday June 5 7:30pm $10 Jive Katze featuring Jenn Rhubright & Gerrit Roessler and John Carden's new jazz project featuring Humberto Salas of Beleza Brasil. According to the online urban dictionary a “Jive Cat” is “not the ordinary person you or your homeboys would hang out with”. And what has a less jiving, less hip and less swinging reputation than a “German Jazz Cat” anyway? – Well, Jive Katze is not your ordinary Jazz band. Jive Katze is the newest addition to the diverse Charlottesville music scene. They combine the vocal Jazz in the tradition of Billy Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald with contemporary forms and concepts influenced by Brad Mehldau, Kenny Werner and Kevin Hays. Gerrit on the other hand has a background as a formally trained Jazz musician and paid his dues playing mostly in Europe with his award winning band Mars Attacks but also frequently in the US.
Friday June 6 10pm $5 Benefit for The Bridge and Ourspace featuring DJs Cadence, Bristol, Boyd80, Clinc. Animations by Colorboy.
Saturday June 7 8pm $15 Corey Harris & 5 x 5 Corey Harris is a guitarist, songwriter, and performer who is leading a contemporary revival of country blues with a fresh, modern hand. He is a powerful and compelling singer and an accomplished guitarist whose musical artistry is complemented by serious explorations of the historical and cultural conditions that gave rise to the blues. He demonstrates his respect for the past and his mastery of the Mississippi Delta blues tradition by interpreting the songs of early blues luminaries in new ways, while also creating an original vision of the blues by infusing his music with a broad range of sounds and styles. Beginning with his 1995 recording Between Midnight and Day, Harris has explored acoustic, rural blues styles with increasing success. Subsequent recordings, such as Greens from the Garden (1999), Mississippi to Mali (2003), and Daily Bread (2005), reflect Harris’ reinterpretations of the African influences on American blues through ethnographic research and musical collaborations in Mali, Guinea, and elsewhere. He has demonstrated the boundless expressive power of blues music by weaving traditional styles together with elements from jazz, reggae, gospel, and African and Caribbean folk music. Maturing from interpreter to creator, his imaginative compositions spark renewed interest in the musical potential of the blues. Sometimes forgoing the traditional 12-bar structure and mimetic repetition common to most blues music, Harris forges an adventurous path marked by deliberate eclecticism. With one foot in tradition and the other in contemporary experimentation, he blends musical styles often considered separate and distinct to create something entirely new for the 21st century.

Sunday June 15 8pm $20 Tab Benoit Louisiana bluesman Tab Benoit has just dropped the best album of his career on us. "Power of the Pontchartrain" is an 11-track wonder that showcases Benoit's thorough command of contemporary blues. He's got it going on here with splendid songwriting, gritty vocals and choice lead guitar work. He cut the record with Louisiana band Leroux, a crew that carries a pretty heavy reputation in the bayou country. The disc opens with killer blues tune "Don't Make No Sense," and the groove only gets better. Benoit taps his Cajun roots for the very cool "Sac-au-lait Fishing," knocks off a great soul number on "Guilty of Lovin' You" and imparts a decidedly bluesy vibe to the CSN&Y classic "For What It's Worth." --BILLBOARD, Philip Van Vleck

Friday June 20 7:30pm $10adv/$15 Scott Miller with Buddy Mondlock Buddy Mondlock writes songs. He does it so well that some great songwriters have recorded his songs on their own albums. Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith and Janis Ian, to name just a few. But there’s nothing like hearing the guy who wrote ‘em sing ‘em. He’s not going to pin your ears back with those songs. He’s going to draw you into his world. Where a single snowflake follows the trajectory of a relationship, where you get your pocket picked by a Roman cat, where you might swim over the edge of the world if you’re not careful and where dreams that don’t come true still count. And it can all be happening in a little folk club or on a stage by a grassy hill or in someone’s living room or in the Royal Albert Hall.

Rocknoceros

These guys have reached "rock star" status in my 2 year old's eyes! Not only do we all love the band and CD, but my 2 year old can count to ten in Spanish thanks to Coach, Boogie Benny and Willibob!
Sunday June 22 7pm $10 Mando Mafia Mando Mafia have been delighting audiences with their award winning "wall-of-mandolin" sound, playing concerts, music and art festivals, dances and dance weekends, wine festivals, weddings, parties and other special events in the Mid-Atlantic states since 1989. Their recordings have been heard nationwide on National Public Radio's All Things Considered and played on radio shows all over the US and as far away as France and Australia. Though the band's music has its roots in Appalachian Old-Time String Band traditions, it has branches just about everywhere. A typical performance might, in addition to old-time hoedown music, include calypso, reggae, rockabilly, klezmer and bluegrass, together with the occasional Finnish wedding march, Chilean sikureada, Puerto Rican or Argentine waltz, and Italian polka. As one reviewer in Bluegrass Unlimited put it: "They have no problem grabbing material from any source that suits their fancy and placing their multi-talented stamp on it." The result is a sound that is, to quote another reviewer from England's Folk Roots magazine, "danceable, foot-tappable, unignorable and irresistible."
Wednesday June 25 7:30pm $8 Gravity presents a special evening, beginning with an in-the-round of young singer-songwriters: Lindsey Osborne, Erin James, Carleigh Nesbit & Rebekah Mullins. The in-the-round will be followed by a duo performance by Peyton Tocheterman (High Society, Fair Weather Bums) and Sam Wilson (Sons of Bill, Sam Wilson Band). Don't miss this opportunity to hear some new voices, as well as a new pairing of Peyton and Sam as an acoustic duo.
Thursday June 26 7:30pm $10adv/$15 Pierce Pettis with special guests Mary Gordon Hall and Jeff Romano “Pierce Pettis doesn’t write mere songs, he writes literature...End to end the songwriting is brilliant...Pierce Pettis albums are events in my listening. His writing just gets better all the time and his singing is marvelous, wry and warm..."--Sing Out!

Mary Gordon began her songwriting career about 20 years ago writing songs for children. Her first album, I Won't Go to Bed Until I Sing My Song, is enjoyed by families around the world. It will soon be re-released as a cd. More recently, though, she began to write and compose music for adults, and has performed in Central Virginia venues including First Night Virginia, Gravity Lounge, Mountain View Grill, Acoustic Muse, Acoustic Charlottesville, The Prism, and Rapunzel's. A regular at the Swannanoa Gathering, students and instructors alike seek her out for her incredible harmonies. It's not unusual to find visiting artists on any of Charlottesville's stages to ask Mary Gordon to come up to sing backup harmonies.

Local recording guru, producer and guitar virtuoso Jeff Romano has been half of Nickeltown, a "King of My Living Room" and an integral part of Hogwaller Ramblers and Who Shot John? Tonight, it's just Jeff and his favorite musical partner--his guitar. Mighty fine, indeed.

Saturday October 25 7pm $20/$25 Chris Smither NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO: [Smither] taps his foot to keep the rhythm, much like the late blues legend John Lee Hooker. His finger-picked guitar lines are sleek, unhurried and insistent. And then there's the voice – equal parts gravel and molasses, Smither's singing sounds like a distillation of the folk and blues heroes he grew up listening to in New Orleans.

ASSOCIATED PRESS: Smither is an American original, a product of the musical melting pot, and one of the absolute best singer-songwriters in the world.

ROLLING STONE: Bathed in the flickering glow of passing headlights and neon bar signs, Smither's roots are as blue as they come. There is plenty of misty Louisiana and Lightnin' Hopkins in Smither's weathered singing and unhurried picking. So fine.

WIRED: The masterful combination of pure folk songwriting and intricate guitar blues are tangible signs of the singer-songwriter's vigorous genius. A megawatt solo performer.
